Company URL or SEO friendly URL?

There seems to be some confusion in those not too internet savvy types about what to choose for their main website address (URL), namely the one which will be listed on the seach engines.

In most cases, we advise our customers to register 2 website URL’s (sometimes many more) for their website – the first being the URL which related sirectly to their company name (www.davesbarbers.co.uk for example), the second being a more search engine friendly URL that reflects that way that internet users search for their type of product or service (www.hairdresserspreston.com for example). – a website can have multiple URL’s pointing to it!

Search engine friendly URLs give a great head start for search engine success for your chosen key phrase as it is assumed by a search engine that your website will almost certainly contain information on the subject of “hairdressing” in “Preston” if your website address is www.hairderssingpreston.com

Search engine friendly URLs like this also deliver additional benefits. For example, if you saw a striking window graphic with the website www.hairdresserspreston.com – you are far more likely to remember it than if the same window graphic displayed the URL – www.daveshairdressingshop.co.uk

To choose a great search engine friendly URL, use Google’s keyword tool (there’s a link at the footer of this website) to check out various search volumes for phrases relating to your business. Once you have found the most searched for key term, have a look around to see if you can pick up the URL that matches the search term exactly. So, if your company refurbishes containers lets say, and the heaviest phrase that you can find in terms of search volumes is “container refurbishment” – try to pick up www.containerrefurbishment.com, it will only cost between 5 and 10 quid for the URL, but it’s a sound investment as your future website will rank well for your potentially lucrative terms.
