Which Key Phrases should I use?

meta Which Key Phrases should I use?

So we’ve just taken a call from a law firm in Nottingham asking for us to look at their website and offer some advice on how it could be improved. No problem – that’s a freebie…

It’s all too common for us to take a look at the page source of a website and immediately recognize issues which can be dramatically improved upon.

In this case (and in many more like it) we were looking at the meta data (meta titles, meta descriptions and meta keywords – the stuff in the code of a website that highlights to search engines what this website might be all about) and noticed that the chosen keyphrases were just completely unrealistic!

For example – if you run a law firm specialising in employment law, dont choose to focus on key phrases such as “employment”, or “law”. These are known as national key phrases and although it might be fair to say that getting your website to the top of the first page of Google on a national basis every time someone types in “law” is achievable, it’s a fairly tall order bearing in mind that there are only 10 spaces on the highly sought after first page, and you would be in competition with every other company in the UK wanting similar exposure.

Be realistic about your goals and choose more targeted, regional key terms if you are operating as a business on a localised basis. I.e. you might choose to instruct a search engine via meta data that your website is all about “employment law Nottingham”.

Be specific, take your target markets search activity into consideration and be realistic about the results you would like your website to achieve.

If you have any questions – give us a bell…
